Troublesome Noises? These Might Mean You Need AC Repair

Your air conditioner is old reliable, but something’s changed recently. You hear something else in the background now whenever the AC kicks on, and you know it wasn’t there before. That’s a problem because over time, the AC noises should just be normal background chatter to you.

Getting AC repair in Lebanon, OH sometimes means calling for funny noises coming from your AC. It’s supposed to sound a very specific way, so when odd noises start emanating from your air conditioner, it’s a real cause for concern. Here’s what they mean.

Metal Wailing/Screeching Sound

Your air conditioner has plenty of mental components. These often interact with one another, and we all know what it sounds like when metal scrapes against metal. It’s less than pleasant to listen to.

Beyond being aggravating to hear, there’s a bigger problem you need to be worried about–high levels of damage. Metal parts in your air conditioner are lubricated to prevent friction and damage, so that noise means the lubrication has worn off. Shut it down and call for repair as soon as possible.

Clicking or Clapping Noise

Your air conditioner uses the thermostat to know when it’s supposed to turn on or off. There’s no internal thermostat inside the AC itself–when the wall thermostat tells it to fire up, it listens. But what if that thermostat isn’t sending the right information along?

A miscalibrated thermostat can be the reason that you don’t get a proper temperature change in your home. The AC could be fine, but if the thermostat is clicking and not actually sending the signal through to the air conditioner, then the AC doesn’t know what to do. It’s awaiting instructions that won’t show up. A technician can recalibrate your thermostat to remedy the situation.

Banging Noises

Loud banging sounds aren’t a good thing. If it sounds like someone is banging on the air conditioner or the ductwork, it means there’s something knocking around inside the unit. This could be a loose part or something along those lines.

But the reason this is serious is because that loose part can damage other components or even knock them loose. Then you’re left with extra damage just because you kept running the AC. This deserves immediate attention.

A Buzz-Like Humming

Buzzing or a light humming is almost always an electrical problem. This could be bad wiring in your air conditioner, but if that’s the case, you have a fire hazard on your hands. If you hear this buzzing, do not ignore it. Shut down your air conditioner and get the help of a technician who knows what they’re doing so they can take a look.

It’s time to call for repairs before those sounds turn into bigger problems. These are precursors to disasters waiting to happen. It’s time to get ahead of the curve and call for repairs now. Your AC is trying to tell you something, and we’re going to figure out what it is.
