When Do You Replace Your Heat Pump?

heat-pump-unit-outside-home

Your heat pump does an excellent job, but eventually it’s going to need to be replaced. It’s hard to know when that time is, but if you know the markers ahead of time, it can help you set up your replacement appropriately.

When you get heat pump service in Cincinnati, OH, your technician will be able to tell you how much life your heat pump has left (more or less). This should help you figure out when you need to replace it, but you can also look for these signs.

Your Heat Pump’s Age

Every HVAC unit, no matter what kind, will eventually fail. While it can be hard to figure out exactly when your heat pump will fail you for the last time, you can look at its age as a marker.

Typically, heat pumps last around 10-15 years of service. While they can pull on for around 20 or more, you should already have a backup in mind by that point. With proper maintenance right from the start, you can prolong your heat pump’s life for as long as possible, but don’t ignore its age just because it’s still working for the time being.

Efficiency Has Gone Downhill

If you’ve noticed that your heat pump just isn’t that efficient anymore, then it’s time to start looking at a replacement. Every type of HVAC system will lose a few percentage points of efficiency per year, but there’s a point where enough is enough.

If your heat pump has to run for a really long time just to hit the temperature goals you have set for your home, that’s not good. Your heart pump should hit the target in 15-20 minutes. If it takes too much longer than that, or your heat pump doesn’t shut off anymore and just keeps running, it’s time to talk about a replacement.

Repairs Are Too Frequent Now

Repairs happen. Even a brand-new heat pump goes through the motions and needs repair every now and then, but when you encounter more than one repair a year, you run into a major problem.

There’s a 50% rule in HVAC repairs. If the cost of repairing your heat pump (and the same goes for air conditioners and furnaces) reaches or exceeds 50% of the price of a brand-new unit, it’s not worth it to repair. Instead, it should be replaced.

Replace it Before it’s Too Late

You shouldn’t wait for a full-scale breakdown to replace your heat pump. Identify when it’s not efficient anymore, when it’s barely chugging along, and plan your replacement accordingly. We can help you with that, as well as start you off on the right foot with annual maintenance, too.

As your heat pump repair specialists, we want you to be comfortable without compromise. We’ll handle every step of the process so you can get back to enjoying your quiet comfort without a failing heat pump unit getting in the way of that.

Contact JM Mechanical Heating & Cooling today to schedule your heat pump replacement as soon as possible.
